Raising Healthy and Active Children

In today's technological world it is easy to allow your children to sit in front of the television for hours or play video games to their hearts content. However, this lifestyle tends to lead to unpleasant consequences. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry reported, "Between 16 and 33 percent of children and adolescents are obese." Fortunately, this hazardous trend can be stopped. If children learn to love physical activity while they are young it is more likely that they will continue to be active and healthy while growing up rather than become obese.

There are many fun activities children can engage in and get great physical benefits from. Below are list of ideas on how to raise a healthy and active child.

Set a Good Example

The best way to teach your child is through your example. If he observes you eating healthy and enjoying regular physical activity he will learn the importance of it through your example much quicker than he would by just being told to.

Set Limits

The recommended amount of time a child should be allowed to watch television, play video games, or time on the computer is 1-2 hours per day. Your opinion and rules may vary according to your circumstances. More than a couple hours of these activities a day can be detrimental to your child's overall physical health and may cut into study time, family time, and other important areas of life. Help your child have a well rounded life by moderating such activities.

Disguise Exercise!

If your child has already learned to loathe the word exercise it may help to disguise it!


Expose your child to sports early on in life and observe which ones he enjoys the most. Enroll them in lessons, place them on a city league team, or club team. Most children end up benefitting socially and physically from sports. It teaches them to be team players and helps build self confidence. Your child will be enjoying the sport so much they will forget they are exercising and doing good for their bodies.

Household Chores

Give your child a few chores a week that involve physical exertion based on their capabilities and limitations. These chores could include things such as: raking leaves, mowing the lawn, taking out garbage, and anything else creative you can think of. Your child will be getting good exercise and also learn responsibility as well!

Family Outings

Get the whole family involved by going...

You will enjoy the time together and help keep the family physically active.

Give Active Gifts!

How can you expect your child to be physically active when all he has lying around is video games and movies? For birthdays and Christmas give your children gifts which promote physical activity like: 

  •  Jump Ropes
  •  Rollerblades
  • Baseball bat or glove
  • Tennis Racket
  • Membership to a local YMCA or other recreational centers

Keep your child's interests in mind and he will be on her way to a more active lifestyle once he has the tools.


All of these tools can be used to better promote an active lifestyle for your child and even for your whole family. Being healthy and active will open a whole new set of doors for your child once he enters the real world. He won't have limitations and will be able to achieve his full potential. If you try taking a few preventative steps now you will be able to positively alter your child's quality of life.
